1968 Monkees - Head - As We Go Along
1968 Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet - No Expectations (*), Factory Girl (*)
(* While recording Beggars Banquet, the Stones used a number of guest musicians,
including Ry, then all but unknown to the public, and Dave Mason of Traffic.
Both of them, as well as Brian Jones, recorded slide-guitar parts for "No Expectations,"
and nobody involved seems very clear on whose recording was used on the released
version. And some sources state that the mandolin on Factory Girl is in fact
a mellotron, played by Dave Mason.)
1969 Arlo Guthrie - Running Down The Road - Every Hand In The Land, Wheel Of
Fortune, Stealin', Living In The Country
1969 Fusion - Border Town - Struttin' Down Main Street, Goin' Up To Clarksdale,
Somebody's Callin' My Name, One More Hand, Another Man, What Magic?, Cajun Two-Step
1969 Gentle Soul - Gentle Soul
1969 Judy Henske & Jerry Yester - Farewell Aldebaran - Raider (Frank Zappa
suggested this album. It was made with the help of a bunch of musical friends,
said to include Ry and David Lindley - both of whom are credited, by some, to
have contributed mandolin [Ry] and bowed banjo [Dave] to this track)
1969 Harper's Bizarre - Harpers Bizarre 4 - Soft Soundin' Music, Knock On Wood
1969 Neil Young - Neil Young (Ry is not credited with anything other than production
on three tracks)

And Heavy 5 string Soul Banjo, Where You Goin' Girl
1969 Phil Ochs - Greatest Hits - One Way Ticket Home
1969 Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - Love In Vain
1969 Ron Elliott - The Candlestickmaker - Deep River Runs Blue
1969 Them - Them - Nobody Cares (Ry is not credited, but rumour has it that
he and Jack Nitzsche [who were doing stuff in an adjacent studio] popped in
for a listen and very possibly took part. A careful listen suggests that if
Ry does play on any track, then that track is Nobody Cares - which carries some
distinctive slide.)
1969 GTO's - Permanent Damage - I Have A Paintbrush In My Hand To Color A Triangle
(Again, Ry is not credited. But he's not the only one [Jeff Beck isn't credited,
either]. The album was produced by Frank Zappa. Old mates Lowell George and
Roy Estrada [later of Little Feat] were involved, as were Nicky Hopkins [Jamming
With Edward] and Russ Titleman [Ry's brother-in-law] - so there's a distinct
possibility that Ry was there. I Have A Paintbrush carries that distinctive
slide. It has to be Ry..... In fact, Lowell George, who wrote, arranged and
produced I Have A Paintbrush (and Do Me In Once), later said of the album: "We
did a GTO's session once which was real fun - even if the production wasn't
top drawer, because there were no real singers in the GTO's, they were performers
rather than singers - but that was the original Little Feat on those songs:
Russ Titleman on guitar, Ry Cooder and me, and I go back to those two cuts we
did and I gasp and cringe. They were hell on earth.")

Note:
There is some dispute as to whether this single exists or not.
(The) Jazzfolk (or The Jazz Folk) was a band formed by Gary 'Magic' Marker,
who played with Ry in the Rising Sons - and who later went on to play with Captain
Beefheart (and some say taught Beefheart everything he knows).
Jazzfolk was re-named
Fusion and released an album, Border Town, in 1969 (re-released on CD by Wounded
Bird Records in 2007).
According to the
Rylander website, Swamp Surfin'/Around the Horn was released on Gulf Pacific
Records - but I can find no mention of either the single or the record label
anywhere else.
Nor can I find anyone
who's even seen the single, let alone heard it - and some of the people I've
asked have been looking for years.
What's more, on
Gary Marker's discography page on the Beefheart website, it says (among other
things):
"Two other
bands of his, The Jazz Folk and The New World Jazz Company ... were never recorded."
